Youth Ministry Discovery Internship

Aims

  1. To promote youth internships with a particular focus on helping churches to retain and develop leadership potential over a one-year period.
  2. To create an internship model that fits the needs of the intern and the church. This will have a focus on distance learning but also have block courses to bring the Discovery Interns together.
  3. To help the faith and ministry formation of the Discovery Intern with a church supervisor and a personal mentor.

Cost

Total of $3500 incl gst for the year.

$2856 to be paid to Carey for Certificate of Christian Studies and an additional $644 to cover regional gatherings and other Internship related costs to be paid to BYM.

Structure of Internship

SERVING

Intentional ministry and leadership development and service in a church context of approximately 16 hours per week.

STUDYING

Tertiary level study in Bible, Theology, Mission and Ministry of approximately 10 hours per week including participation at various block courses and formational learning times throughout the year.

Courses for completion of Certificate of Christian Studies:

  • MF505 Christian Ministry Training (Full Year – 30 credits) This is directed reflection on ministry in their local church.
  • MM572 Foundations of Youth Ministry (Semester One Auckland or Wellington – Block course – 15 credits) This course will encourage students to begin to think theologically and philosophically about youth ministry. Students will develop pragmatic / practical skills within the ministry context as well as engaging with a range of recent scholarship that highlights various approaches to, and ethos of youth ministry.
  • MM581 Mission of God (Semester Two – Distance – 15 credits) This course involves strands of learning in bible, theology, spirituality, history, culture and society. The practice of ministry and mission are introduced with a common orientation towards knowing and serving God within the community of God’s people as participants in God’s mission.

SUPPORTING

Supervision and mentoring by experienced practitioners, and support and feedback through Carey’s Field Education process. Discovery interns also journey and support each other as a cohort.
